Spendthrift is one of those words that mean almost exactly the opposite of their component parts. From Wikipedia: "A spendthrift is someone who spends money prodigiously and who is extravagant and recklessly wasteful." Although, if you look at the parts spend and thrift you would think that it means someone who is cheap. Actually that last one would be for someone who is a spendthrift.
