White Sony PlayStation 2 on sale, cheap
October 29th, 2007 by Mark R in Gaming Gadgets
I don’t know how Sony has done it, but their replacement model of the Playstation 3 has yet to replace the Playstation 2 predecessor. At least, that is what it seems like. Generally, when a replacement system arrives, the old one gets permanently thrown in the trash or the video game system dies. For example, some of you might remember how the Sega Genesis eclipsed the Sega Master System, but the Sega Saturn hardly saw the light of day.
I’m not certain what force of nature, if any, keeps the Playstaion 2 still on the market, but there is a new model of the PS2 that is due out, possibly arriving as soon as next week. The PS2 White will go on sale at about $150, and will include DualShock 2, as well as Singstar Pop. The set will also include two microphones, which will result in a lot of great nights of karaoke for doubles. I had a chance to play the newest version of Singstar at the Penny Arcade Expo, and I couldn’t help but love it.
I suppose if I really wanted the PS2, I suppose I would think this was a good deal. However, I’m wondering if Sony isn’t trying to get some quick Christmas sales. I am also wondering if Sony is just giving the PS2 one last hurrah before its marketing department plans on being completely PS3 centered. I suppose the next year will reveal what will happen as far as what direction Sony is going to go.
Part of me wants to just say let the PS2 go and move on. However, like a good relationship, you just can’t let go of a good thing.

November 1st, 2007 at 5:31 pmThere’s one thing that’s different.
Sony didn’t kill of the PS2, when launching the PS3.
Sega killed the Genesis, in hopes of moving numbers to Saturn, effectively pissing everybody off.

November 9th, 2007 at 5:17 pmSony is just doing with the PS2 what it did with the original Playstation. It’s plan before it ever launched the PS3 was to keep the PS2 alive for several years after the PS3 launch. I think it’s good business actually.
