Did Samsung kill the Sports Camcorder?

Sports Camcorder RIP

It may be true. Very quietly, Samsung seems to have decided to shut down it’s forums for the Samsung Sports Camcorder … a camcorder which not only recorded to SD cards in MPEG4, but also came with an auxiliary lens which could fit on a helmet, arm, or even be mounted on equipment. There was even a wireless version called the SC-210WL. Sadly, though, this message was left by the webmaster on the Sports Camcorder forums:

I know it’s been a long couple of years that we’ve been running this site; and it’s with a sadness in my heart that this site will be closing its doors before too long … There has also been several technical imperfections with the units – some fixed – some not… Samsung, at this point, will not be releasing new Sportscams; at least not in the U.S., however I have not found anything to indicate any future global releases. While we shift our focus to memory-based camcorder units (Hi Def, even!), this particular genre of camera has come to an end.

Too bad, too. Because the Sports Camcorder filled an important niche of the sports enthusiast who also wants to record their adventures up close and personal. And the auxiliary lenses, particularly the wireless one represented the cutting edge of video camera design and thinking.
