Wind-powered toy car coming your way

Tamiya and Loopwing have collaborated with each other to bring this DIY wind power generator set, allowing you to create your very own clean energy at home for the low, low price of $30. Assembling it takes a mere half hour, where you cobble together a couple of gears, a capacitor, and the steering among others on the little car. Just attach the car to the windmill charging station and let nature get to work. Apparently, 5 minutes of exposure to 5mi/sec winds will be able to generate enough juice to power the car for 3.5 hours. Batteries? What’s that?

Wow, “5 minutes of exposure to 5mi/sec winds will be able to generate enough juice…”

That’s like 3600 times as much wind as a mild 5mph wind! Since the power you get from wind goes up with the cube of the wind speed, this is 46 billion times as much energy as you might expect. You could run a city off this, if indeed you get that kind of wind and your device has enough area and doesn’t fall apart.

Anyway, it’s cool to have a non-plug-in car!

Isn’t 5mi/sec equal to 300 miles per hour?

1 mile per minute = 60 mph. 5 miles per minute = 300 mph. 5 miles per second = 300×60 = 18000 mph.
