Linux computer on a USB key?!

June 25th, 2007 by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, PC Gadgets, USB Gadgets

calao-linux.jpgCalao Systems from France have managed to cram the equivalent of a full fledged Linux computer into something as tiny and portable as a USB fob, measuring a mere 3.3″ x 1.4″. Dubbed the USB-9260, this device is powered by an ARM926EJ-S processor clocked at 190MHz along with 64MB RAM and 256MB of storage space, thanks to the incorporation of NAND flash. Connectivity options include a couple of USB 2.0 ports and a single Ethernet port. While the hardware specifications aren’t anything to shout at, you will certainly have the smallest PC in the room the next time you tote this to a BYOC LAN party.

With no screen or vga adaptor, how are you supposed to use this thing?

Seems pretty pointless to carry around a computer in the style of a USB hub, since you’d also have to carry around a keyboard, mouse, ethernet cable, etc.

No man ! SSH, telnet, SCP, and many other options through ethernet, serial or usb are available to access the linux from any other computer, regardless the OS.

What’s the point of having a computer that requires another computer to use? I guess I just don’t see the point.

In theory, it’s a cool step forward, but you can already run Linux directly from a USB flash drive on any computer, which can have much more than 256MB of storage space….
