Move over PS3, PS4 is coming your way

We all know that the Sony PS3 has just been released for less than a year to date, but plenty has already been written about this next gen (now current gen) console, ranging from the amazing value it packs thanks to the Blu-ray drive and technology inside to the exorbitant cost of a black and hot paperweight that pushes new technology to consumers whether they want them or not. What most of us are not prepared for would be any announcement of a new PlayStation console anytime soon, since that would be suicide for a company that is already experiencing enough troubles as it is on the gaming front.

Citing reports from the Australian “Lifestyle Technology Guide” Smarthouse and their unidentified “inside source”, Sony is apparently working on a new iteration of the PS3 so early in the game. While this rumored new iteration won’t be sold to just gamers only, it will feature some stark differences compared to the black behemoth that you see sitting on store shelves. The drive bay and attachment area will see some definite changes, and word has it this revamped console will be known as the PS4 – how original.

Despite the change in number signifying quantum leaps in terms of technology, everything inside including the chip set will remain the same as the PS3, but users will get new media manager software. Obviously this could probably mean that the PS4 is the entertainment hub that Sony hoped the PS3 would be, and perhaps this is a knee jerk reaction prompted by disappointing sales figures all over the world (except for Europe).

Please, what a total load of nonsense this is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear%2C_uncertainty_and_doubt

Just because Microsoft stitched the 360 owners over with a new console revision after a year, Sony know better than that.

Lets look logically. Why would they produce a new console revisoon based on PS3? Perhaps with a bigger HDD? The HDD is already customer upgradable in the PS3, no why bother. Perhaps software changes? Well being based on the same Cell, there is no reason why the current PS3 would not be able to do the same software. Perhaps hardware? The PS3 has a load of USB2 ports, more than enough for any hardware expansion.

The only thing where Sony missed a trick, is putting USB ports on the rear, or some kind of universal expansion slot.

This article is nothing more than Microsoft sponsored FUD. Sony rarely respond to press rumours, and usually give a “we don’t comment on internet rumours”. This time however, Sony have responded “this is total garbage”..

The ps2 is still outselling all the consoles and last I checked the ps3 is selling well. What troubles are you talking about? The ps3’s only problem is that there are not alot of exclusive games but that will change before the holiday season.

Mak Says: May 4, 2007 at 8:35 am

Indeed. Sony are outselling the WII at the low end of the market, with the PS2. Now Sony are also outselling 360 at the top end of the market.

In addition, PS2 owners today, will be PS3 owners in a few years time.

Win/Win/Win for Sony…

I havent even got the chance to dust my PS3 yet and now this??? Not feeling very good at this news :(

Mak Says: May 4, 2007 at 10:01 am

@JMS

Don’t believe this, this is FUD from the masters of FUD (Microsoft).

IF Sony are working on something based on the PS3, then it will COMPLIMENT it, not OBSOLETE it, as this article suggests. I would take a guess at a Cell based media centre, something that does not play games, (i.e. no RSX), but it a network media centre and Blu-Ray player, and sells BELOW the PS3 price. It’s also likely that anything this new device has (if it even exists) will be also added to the PS3, as the new device is simply a subset of PS3 hardware.

PS3 owners have nothing to fear, Sony have never revised a console in it’s lifetime and left their owners in the luch, Microsoft have done it twice.

This “rumor” is sheer and utter nonesense. Yes, there will be variations on the PS3 coming, just as there have been with the PS1 and PS2 before it, but the PS4 is down the road quite a ways.

Sony is still actively working on implementing the first phase of the PS3. They’re busy readying Home, bolstering the Playstation Store to include more content like HD movies and music, as well as games. Sony has a great console and a strong strategy underway for the online community.

Given the investment Sony continues to make in the PS3, and their commitment to cost reduction, there’s no way they’re ready to pitch it for a PS4 anytime soon. Sony has been adamant to state from the start that their goal for the PS3 is to have a ten year life cycle. That may be a bit ambitious, since Micro$oft and Nintendo will need to act sooner, but any mention of a PS4 will derail the momentum they’re gaining with the PS3.

The PS3 is a great console. Sony’s just getting started, and they will continue to be successful.

You Playstation guys are ridiculous. Yes it is a nice piece of machinery, but look around you blind fools. Customer opinion ranks the PS3 as the worst launch in the history of mainstream consoles. All these new consoles have problems in some area. However where I’m at no one my age(22) has a PS3. Plenty have a Wii and even more have a 360. Look at Christmas numbers. PS3 was the worst, the wii the runner up, and 360 sold more than both combined. Sony claims there was a shortage ,but you could buy them a week after Christmas in my town. Maybe not NYC, but there was no shortage or I would have hocked dozens on ebay. My friend had grand plans and got stuck with one. I won’t debate that the PS3 has better numbers and graphics and potential than the others. But this is the biggest under achievement ever. I liked the PS2 and still love my steering wheel and Gran Turismo, but I will look forward to the day the PS3 isn’t a worthless piece of junk (unless your all about the Blu-Ray) For now I’ll invest in a real computer.(Plus the graphics and games are better right now and I’ve got controllers.)

Now come on, PS4, doubt it. it will be called the PS3, it will be a slim version, just like they have done with the normal PS Series. If they want a software update it will come with Firmware updates

dude Says: May 5, 2007 at 10:10 am

Here come the sony fanboys getting pissed haha sony always is trying to squeeze more money out of everyone just becuase the ps3 sucks FOR RIGHT NOW doesnt mean they need to come out with a newer version . the ps3 might get better later. hopefully

Firewaterc2 Says: June 6, 2007 at 9:49 pm

I mean come on Screw ps3..600$ how many was they expecting to sell? when 360 is 400$ for the high end model…and if u look at the specs on both consoles 360 takes the cake..WOW blu-ray…ok thats just something microsoft didnt pick up on right away..so give em time..when microsoft launched the Xbox in 2001 they were late since Sony debuted in ’95 so obviously sony has more clientelle to play with..i think microsoft is in it for the experience where as sony is in it for the profits..

GrunT Says: July 11, 2007 at 6:46 am

PS4 already? When I bougt a PS3? Well, Sony are DUMB AS HELL. What will be with people who bought PS3? Why they eaven bought it? For couple of games? Then for switch for PS4? Well, if it would be PS3 Elite, than OK, but if my PS3 with blue-ray will not read PS4 (or how it is called) games, why do I bought it? Say, is it a joke, or they will makj something like PS3 Elite, because there is almost nothing for PS3. If PS3 will not read and run PS4 games, I will newer buy Sony’s technologies, as well as millions of other people, who bought PS3 already.

Mark Says: July 11, 2007 at 11:44 am

GrunT:

Don’t worry, no PS4 coming. The PS3 is in it for the long haul (10 years). This is nothing more than Microsoft creating FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) about the PS3.

Xanten Says: January 24, 2008 at 4:25 pm

dont worry why would sony make a new system when the ps3 isnt even close to be at its full potential with its 7 cores and insane graphic prossesor its here for a long time to come.

ed Says: February 5, 2008 at 2:38 pm

DONT BE SO GULLIABLE !! PS4 MY ASS. PS3 WILL BE HITTING ITS STRIDE IN A YEAR OR TWO. IT WILL HAVE A BETTER GAME LIBRARY THAN XBOX’S BY 2008’S END. IT WILL BE MICROSOFT RUSHING OUT A NEW CONSOLE TO COMPETE IN 2 OR 3 YEARS, NOT SONY. WE DIDNT RUSH OUR CONSOLE TO MARKET, (RROD COUGH COUGH) YOU SAY EVERYTHING INSIDE WILL REMAIN IDENTICAL BE WILL BE GETTING NEW MEDIA MGNT SOFTWARE. THAN WOULD BE DONE BY A FIRMWARE UPDATE, NOT A NEW SYSTEM. ITS SAD THAT A FEW READERS APPARENTLY BELIEVE YOUR NONSENSE. MAYBE I CAN SELL THEM A BRIDGE.

ed Says: February 5, 2008 at 2:58 pm

AND GRUNT… YOU CALL SONY “DUMB AS HELL”. LOOK IN THE MIRROR PAL. THIS PS4 STORY IS NONSENSE. COME ON MAN, THINK ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU OVER REACT.

Not sure if the PS3 will have more games than the 360. Just went to go rent a game for the PS3 last weekend, and all they had was two mesley shelves. Glanced over the divider and perused the x360 side, they have 1 1/2 full rows of games. Sure, starting about now the PS3 will have better titles then the xbox is capable of, but it will never have more games. But, whoa unto Microsoft when games require all 7 Cores running at top specs… thats Xbox 720 teritory right there. Unless some new 1440p standards emerge…. the PS3 will be around for another 7-8 years.

shaky Says: March 11, 2008 at 1:51 pm

PS4? highly unlikely.to everyone saying it’s just microsoft pulling a FUD stunt, look at sales figures, the only people who are Fearing, Uncertain and Doubting are Sony themselves because microsoft and even the wii are leaving them in a cloud of dust to rot. with questionable exclusive titles like MGS4 (MGS3 sucked), its really no wonder it’s being hammered. Sony said that the PS3 would outstrip the 360 in terms of graphical output but lo and behold, me, you or anyone has’nt seen any evidence of this. the best i have seen is multi platform releases that look the same on both consoles. Most people have PC’s etc so the software included on the PS3 is’nt a very big selling point,and neither is the blu-ray. Not many people are willing to pay round about £5-£10 more for a blu-ray dvd over their standard counterparts. Their HD tv’s are enough of an improvement.

65comet Says: June 11, 2008 at 2:57 am

just read that sony plans to launch ps4 no earlier than 2010 so cool your jets, this news is bs. Oh and the ps4 will be a lot different than a few modifications to the ps3.

unendlich Says: June 18, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Its just probably gonna be an update like a ps3 v.4 not a ps4, geez. By the way Killzone 2 comes out Feb ’09 and ff versus 13 in maybe Dec or Jan so yeah take that xbox. Oh, and MGS 4 is freakin awesome (a little too many cutscenes though)

MGS4 is GREAT and anyone who has ever owned a ps1 or 2 and played MGS is going to want to get this game. Although you are right about MGS sucking the fanbase for this series will go wild about MGS4. And the ps3 does have better graphical output. It just hasn’t been utilized by game developers due to the high cost of using the ps3 platform to utilize the better hardware/software. Blueray is definitely a selling point. The ps3 is one of the better bluray players on the market (I know its not the best one, but its still top of the line) and is cheaper than other just as good blueray players plus, YAY for everyone, its a PS3 so you can also play ps3 games along with watching better quality dvds. And later into the future regular standard dvds will become obsolete just like the analog tv is currently.

withoughtlightiam Says: June 18, 2008 at 6:33 pm

I meant MGS-3 sucking not the series. Apologies to the fans

Ryan Says: July 9, 2008 at 3:29 am

ok look. i got the facts about this. ps3 is better than 360. when people say xbox has a bigger community, dosnt mean anything. look on the back of the games, it says 18 online, doesnt matter if you have 2 billion online your still only gonna play with 18 people. ps3 has resistance and you can play up to 40 at once. ps3 online is free, xbox online is a few bucks a month and they other boht bout the same features too. besides ps3 is cheaper. xbox yah, maybe be cheaper for the console but ps3 comes with more.
for example take the cheapest ones.
ps3= 399.99
xbox= 279.99

ps3 comes with:
blu-ray
wifi ready
free internet

xbox doesnt they are priced at:
hd player= 180
wifi= 100
xbox live= $50 annual fee

total cost:
ps3 399.99
xbox 610.00

im not going to even get into what they have inside them cuz ps3 beats xbox in all of it. dont beleiev me?
email me at [email protected] and i’ll explain it to you

ahmed Says: August 15, 2008 at 9:53 pm

thats right, and even guys dont forget that PS4 is build with an internet console which means u can download anything such as games,videos etc. as if you are using your computer, look at whats on the inside of this machine, dont judge at its similarity of the shape between ps3 and ps4, its like you are talking about two similar computers but the quality and features you can find on ps4 is different.
