The Sky IM-R200: keyboard?… Umm.

Sky IM-R200

Smudgy glossy surfaces and touch screens are so ‘in’ today! After some very cool mobiles, Sky Mobile thought they should break the monotony while still benefiting from the hype and have released the Sky IM-R200. On first glance, it seems to be yet another black shiny slider phone, but upon opening it you’ll find there is no keyboard but instead another display.

Most of this handset’s decency is represented by the fact that it hides the smudgiest part, its touch screen. A keyboard-only function of the display seems utterly ridiculous (oh wait, there’d be a new feature: skinnable keys! Wow!), so it would be better to sport handwriting recognition and at least control for the 2-3 games it will have).

This Dual LCD technology as they call it would actually be useful for a smartphone (and the possibilities would be huge - not just handwriting and DS-like gaming), but by the specifications this is just a run-of-the mill phone:

  • Multimedia player and ‘3D sound’
  • 2 megapixel webcam with autofocus
  • 116 MB of onboard flash and microSD slot

Let’s all hope that it won’t catch on and that we’ll still get to FEEL our daily key presses. Luckily, this phone will only be sold in Korea by the Curitel network.
