Purify your water on the go! Admit it, you think it’s cool.
by Mike in Miscellaneous Gadgets
Some people love to do crazy things in crazy places. Be it mountain climbing in some foreign country or going out to the rain forest or jungle. No matter what crazy things you do, you’re going to need to drink water and you probably know that you’re told not to just drink any water you find in many countries. Rather than carrying cases and cases of bottled water (it gets heavy) or boiling all of your water, you could use some sort of device that uses some sort of powers to purify your water. The SteriPEN UV Light Water Purifier, perhaps? Maybe.
The SteriPEN is extremely portable, being about the size of your standard thermometer. Even better, it’s easy to use. To clean a 16 ounce bottle of water takes about a minute. On to how it works. The SteriPEN’s germicidal UV lamp automatically turns on whenever immersed in water, then all you do is select the dosage, either 16 ounces or 32 ounces, and let it work its magic. One to two minutes later you’ve got yourself a bottle of water that is 99.99% safe to drink. Just hope you’re not the unfortunate person that gets the nasty bacteria in that .01% because boy, that would suck. A lot. The advantages to the SteriPEN over some other filtration system is mainly the portability but also the fact that no chemicals are involved, keeping that natural taste in your water. Of course, the UV rays might add a nasty taste, but as you can imagine, that’s not mentioned in the product description. It might be a bit bad for sales.
For $100, you can get yourself a SteriPEN UV Light Water Purifier along with 1 filter which gives you about 5,000 uses. A full list of the most common microorganisms (aka bad things) the SteriPEN destroys can be found on the product page.

February 20th, 2007 at 8:32 pmJust wanted to respond to a comment on the SteriPEN. I am the inventor of the SteriPEN and CEO of Hydro-Photon, Inc. – the company that makes and sells the SteriPEN.
The author says, “Of course, the UV rays might add a nasty taste, but as you can imagine, that’s not mentioned in the product description. It might be a bit bad for sales.” In response, I will simply point out that bottled water and even water for soft drinks is frequently UV purified – specifically because light does NOT change the chemistry or taste of water.

February 21st, 2007 at 9:54 amSo, how does the magic light handle physical particles of contaminant (dirt, etc)? Not at all, I’d imagine. Same problem as the other “gee-wiz keen” solution, the Miox. Sticking to my Katadyn, thanks.

Mystech Says:
February 21st, 2007 at 11:06 amActually, many types of dirt WILL make you sick depending on its chemical composition. Also, dirt particles may contain bacterial or viral elements inside the particle, which if opaque enough could resist the exposure to UV light.

September 10th, 2007 at 7:31 amGROWING CONCERNS OF CONTAMINATED DRINKING WATER
Hello, my name is Carl Cooper and I am owner and founder of Silco & Co and Silco products. I have came up with a formula using colloidal minerals to purify water from any water source from lakes, ponds, rivers etc. Many people think that these water purification kits can not take the heavy metals out of the water, but thats where their wrong. My water purification kit can kill all the bacteria and pathogens the water may contain and also making the heavy metals along with all other bacteria and contaminents sink to the bottom creating what you would call the “flocculation” process. If you would like to no more you can e-mail me or visit my web site at http://www.silconano.com thank you!.

distillation.
