Hand Grenade Oil Lamp

Hand Grenade Oil Lamp

What do you do if you have too many grenades, make oil lamps out of them obviously!

These are probably the strangest oil lamps I’ve ever seen, made out of authentic US Army grenades. The grenades are available in their natural color or gilded in gold or silver and for an additional $5 you can get them gift boxed. So if you ever wanted to send somebody a grenade in the post now you can.

The hand grenade oil lamp is available at Elsewares from $50, if yours has a pin in it you may want to send it back.

Ball that measures how Far it was thrown

by Al

Virtual Distance Football

This is a cool idea, a football (American) that can measure and display how far it has been thrown, so next time you throw a great touch down pass you can brag about the distance accurately (rather than saying it went really really far).

Known as the Virtual Distance Football, the distance thrown is calculated by using sensors to detect when the ball is thrown and then the impact of a catch or fumble (though how it knows the distance between the two is beyond me).

The virtual distance football is available from Discovery for $19.95.

The Beer Launching Fridge

Beer Launching Fridge

This is the perfect example of what student man can achieve when they have enough time, patience, money and love of beer; the beer launching fridge.

Invented and created by John W. Cornwell this is what he had to say about his amazing creation:

Have you ever gotten up off the couch to get a beer for the umpteenth time and thought, “What if instead of ME going to get the BEER, the BEER came to ME???” Well, that was how I first conceived of the beer launching fridge. About 3 months and several hundred dollars later I have a fully automated, remote controlled, catapulting, man-pit approved, beer launching mini-fridge. It holds 10 beers in its magazine with 14 more in reserve to store a full case. It is controlled by a keyless entry system. Pressing unlock will start the catapult rotating and when it is aiming at your target, pressing unlock again will stop it. Then the lock button can be pressed to launch a beer in the selected direction.

To really appreciate this piece of beer fuelled engineering check out the video after the Continue reading » jump The Beer Launching Fridge

by Edwin

pure-dmx-25.jpgDAB radio is all fine and dandy to listen to, and fans of this format now have another means to listen to it in a compact micro Hi-Fi form, courtesy of the PURE DMX-25 DAB Micro System with MP3 playback. Not only do you get to enjoy DAB radio, the DMX-25 also features the ability for you to groove to your favorite tunes in MP3 or WMA file formats thanks to the USB port. Just load up the desired tunes on a USB flash memory drive, plug it in and you’re good to go. Of course, if USB flash memory drives are not your cup of tea, you can always settle on storing your library of digital tunes on an SD card. Those who hanker after a little retro music can always recycle their extensive CD collection with the PURE DMX-25.

Samsung Aura attracts envious stares

by Edwin

samsung-aura.jpg

Samsung on the whole has really come into its own over the years in terms of hardware development and design. The Aura R20 notebook will be the latest release by the South Korean electronics giant, boasting a minimalist styling in a glossy black piano finish that is guaranteed to attract envious stares from your colleagues (and fingerprints as well, if the current gadget trend is anything to go by). One could say that these notebooks are beautiful enough to give the Apple MacBook a run for its money, but Apple fans will most probably think of such a comparison as heresy.

Robot drivers?

by Dan

stanley.jpgWhat if robots could substitute humans when driving cars by 2030? That is what many scientists believe, and the advancements on this field will be showed this November on the challenged created by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Probably most of you remember when a Volkswagen Tuareg named Stanley won the challenge late in 2005. The driverless car , created by a Stanford team, traveled 212km across the Nevada Desert and won the prize of $2 million. The funny thing is that out of 23 participant cars only 4 managed to finish the course. Hopefully the challenge will show improved results this year. Continue reading » Robot drivers?

Nest Space-age High Chair

Nest

You don’t see many designer high chairs (babies have no taste) so this one by Mozzee caught my, The Nest.

The Nest isn’t just a high chair, with it’s adjustable height it’s designed to grow with your child:

  • Nest Dine – with tray for baby feeding (6 months – 2 years)
  • Nest Boost – without tray (2 years to 4 years)
  • Nester – Low chair (upto 6 years)

It’s not cheap, costing £225.28 (~$450) but it does look kind of cool.
