Wireless Backup Camera
More and more these days, high end luxury cars are coming with backup cameras, allowing the parking impaired to save themselves some cash when they hit the two cars in their way when parallel parking. If you don’t have the cash for one of those cars, but still suck at parking, VR3’s RoadMaster Wireless Backup Camera will let you add one to any type of car you want.

Yes, the camera is completely wireless, but that doesn’t mean it’s a 5 minute install; you’ll still need to get a power source, which can your car’s brake lights or a 9V battery. The camera is contained in a small mounting unit which fits easily above the license plate of your car. Once it’s setup and powered, it’s all easy from there. The camera can be setup to be always on or on only when in reverse. The camera’s lens is wide angle, meaning you get a good view of what’s behind you, and that image is transferred wirelessly to the 2.5 inch LCD that can be mounted either to your visor or your dashboard. Sure, 2.5 inches isn’t exactly enormous, but it’s enough for the casual use it’ll receive. Hopefully in future models screen size will be bumped up to 3 or 4 inches.

All of the specs, and even the setup of VR3’s RoadMaster Wireless Backup Camera are good, not great, but if you want a wireless camera in an already purchased car or don’t want to lay down the cash for a luxury vehicle, this is a good choice; best of all, the price is only $140.

Installed the camera/monitor in a 2003 Avalanche, and have intermittant reception issues. The monitor is hard-wired, and flickers on periodically while driving, possibly due to wayside interference. While backing, in daylight, and in the open (e.g. a parking lot), the system works great. At night, it needs a lot of light. In my garage, for some reason, I get interference, and the picture breaks up intermittently, limiting its usefulness.

John and Steve…this thing’s got 13 levels of brightness. Initially, I thought it was virtually worthless at night as well. But when my wife pointed out the brightness button to me, it turns out that it’s got pretty good visibility at night with just the reverse lights.

As far as the system flickering on during normal driving, I just press the power button and turn the thing off once I’m done backing up.

how far does the wireless feature work with this camera, if you had a 12 volt supply for the monitor, could you take the camera inside, or away from the vechilcle. Please let me know if you have one, at stevenpaulreilly@aol.com
many thanks
