My wife’s new Macbook Pro,, what’s worth loading on it?!

by Fred in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Software

Macbook ProSo my wife got a sweet new Macbook Pro, yes,, the REALLY new one.  My question to you, as a non-fruitputerist, (did I say that right?)  Is what to load, that’s actually useful for a regular human.

Keep in mind She (and occasionally I) will be using it for regular web based human uses (fun and work).  There will be no-database construction, web programming, flash programming, programming, or massive FTPing.  There will also be no in-depth registry editing, or macro creation either.  So what we’re looking for here is,, real software usable by real people (ok, and sometimes she sequences DNA (if you have any great tree/sequencing software, it’s be appreciated too!)).

I do have some lists courtesy of lifehacker and digg listed below.
However, I am still unsure of what is REALLY necessary, let’s face it, there is a LOT of software out there, but really we’re looking for what is really worth loading, and maybe a bit on why.  Let’s get those comments coming!

Here’s the best Mac software grouped links sites I have so far, but she’s not willing to let me load anything without prior knowledge of what they do.  What’s there that’s great??

 Extremely Useful Macbook Freeware

 Quicksilver

iProcrastinate

The Top 7 Free Utilities To Maintain A Mac.

So really are these up to snuff?  What have I missed?!

This should be fun, let’s start the commenting!!

The first site I recommend is Freemacware.com. There are five hundred freeware apps on there, all of them have description and a link to the developer’s site. They post one new one everyday.

Gah, I’m jealous of your wife! For mine, I’m going to have to wait until Christmas! :( (38 days, in case you were wondering)

VoodooPad is awesome for free-form thinking/note-taking/etc.

There is a free and a paid version. Either are great IMO.
