Mobile Internet at 3,6 Megabits per second
November 4th, 2006 by Dan in Mobile Phones
How would you like having your mobile’s internet connection as fast as your home Adsl? Well, depending on what you are getting from the Adsl provider it can even be faster than a home connection!
The Italian provider TIM (Telecom Italia Mobiles) just announced a new service called “TIM UMTS Hi-Speexd” that will provide mobile internet access with speeds that go up to 3,6 Megabits per second. Users will be able to connect to the Internet directly from the mobile phone or through the use of a Hi-Speed PC card that is integrated into a notebook.
The service was already being deployed in the largest Italian cities such as Milan, Rome and Turin. Now, says Telecom Italia, the coverage will be extended to smaller cities, reaching almost 50% of the Italian territory.
There are many handsets compatible with the service including the Motorola V3xx, the Samsumg Z630 and Z620 and the Brionvega N7100.
Telecom Italia is investing heavily into innovative value added services lately. It was in fact the first mobile operator in the world to integrate instant messaging services with their mobile plans. The service is called “Super SMS” and was subscribed by more than 3 million customers on the following days of the announcement.
Those moves should solidify Telecom Italia’s strong position within the Italian telecommunications market. The operator holds a market share of 60% for mobile subscribers.
