Muslims Offended by Apple Store

by methodshop in Miscellaneous Gadgets, Tech News

Jason O’Grady from PowerPage.org found an interesting research report that says the 5th Ave Apple Store is offensive to some Muslims. Why? Apparently the glass cube shape of the Apple Store entrance resembles the Ka’ba in Mecca (see image). The report, which was translated by The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), also finds problems in people referring to the glass cube as the “Apple Mecca,” the store being open 24 hours a day like the Ka’ba, and because “alcoholic beverages” are served inside at a bar.

Obviously the offended Muslims in question have never actually been to the 5th Ave Apple Store. The only bar in the Apple Store is the Genius Bar and although the advice of a Genius Bar employee may be intoxicating, it isn’t alcoholic. For those of you unfamiliar with the Apple Genius Bar, it’s a booth inside the Apple Store where you can bring your broken iPod or computer and have them take a look at it. There are no alcoholic drinks served at the Genius Bar, just knowledge. The purpose of the Genius Bar must have gotten lost in translation. For the record, Apple Stores do not serve alcohol. People getting drunk and playing with expensive computers and iPods probably isn’t a good idea.

As far as building a cube shaped store entrance that’s open 24 hours a day…. Apple’s 100% guilty of doing that. But can a simple glass cube really be blasphemous? Please write a comment below and share your thoughts.

I’m sure those same Muslims are offended by the fact that you posted about this issue too. There’s no explaining some things.

I don’t know who these ’some’ Muslims are who were offended but none that I know are or would be. What frustrates me is not that ‘Muslims’ are again getting offended over nothing- but that these ridiculous stories are still printed as news making the world think we’re generally boneheads. Maybe the translation exagerrated the story too- cause no-one is claiming exclusive rights to cube shaped buildings. So “But can a simple glass cube really be blasphemous?” is a complete non-question.

Care to show me a link to any Muslims who are actually offended? Guess what - you won’t find any!

This is a case of some anonymous idiot in a cave somewhere making a statement and then blogs/newspapers regurgitating it to somehow become “Muslims Offended” or “Muslim Group Outraged”. MEMRI does this all the time, and they won’t divulge the original source. What are they afraid of?

This story is nothing but group slander and should be dropped rather quickly.

haji Says:

this is a hoax. MEMRI refuses to divulge the actual website or any real offended muslims.

Mark Rushton Says:

Here’s how anti-muslim sentiment is manufactured…

“As it turns out, MEMRI itself is not an innocent bystander in this mess. Instead, the self-proclaimed “Middle East Media Research Institute” has a long history of heavy-handed anti-Muslim bias, and — surprise, surprise — appears to have ties to the Israeli government as well. As uncovered in the UK Guaradian Unlimited…”

Umm - no one was offended.

Did you even read what MEMRI wrote? There was no source, no citation, no nothing. Somehow a random uncited website represents ‘community’

Apple Gazette does a good job debunking this nasty lie.

I’m offended by their being offended. So you who are offended, please stop expressing your offense!

Is there anything that one can say, do, create, etc that won’t offend someome? Political correctness has gone too far. People need to understand that not everyone shares their beliefs or can be aware of what offends them. People need to CHILL and learn TOLERANCE.

Sounds like a lame excuse to get copy to me. There’s no noises, no protests, no dischuffed Islamist clerics mounting raging vocalisations against Apple here. Do we really think that this story merits any serious attention from Muslims, when they already have so much to deal with worldwide? But, our house is cube shaped, and so is our garage…

Most of the comments are idiotic, it seems news worthy now to show incidents that supposedly offend Muslims, yes there are lunatic fringe elements that ruin it for the rest of the Muslims, but this is the same for any group.

As for the cube itself that’s all it is, it’s the most tenuous link to “blasphemy” I’ve seen in my life.

Unfortunately many non muslims don’t read beyond the headline or think rationally and just fall for the Islamophobic agenda the media are pursuing. Thanks to the guy who mentioned this MEMRI are linked to the Israeli government, so surprise surprise, they’re doing to the Muslims what Hitler did to the Jews.

Guy Says:

Who refers to the store as “Apple Mecca?”

MockingBirdtheWizard Says:

October 13th, 2006 at 9:05 am

if muslims can get into an uproar and call for neheadings over cartoons in danish newspapers, why not this?

it’s easy to believe that a group that has been blowing up coffee shops, busses, airplanes, beheading people etc for a difference of opinion would take offense at, whwat seems to us to be, silly things.
but, heck, that is what islamo-fascism is all about.

the idiot who says jews are doing to the muslims what hitler did to the jews must be getting his news skewed.
it’s the muslims, again, for over 70 years now, that are targeting and murdering civilians because of religious beliefs.
read some history.
they’ve been barbarians for thousands of years and aren’t about to stop.
(granted, not ALL muslims.. just the islamo-fascist ones)

the other problem is that the reasonable muslims, if there are any, are not being as vocal AGAINST the idiocy and violance as the islamo fascists are being FOR the violence.

people hear the squeaky wheel.

Eddie Says:

October 13th, 2006 at 12:44 pm

MockingBirdtheWizard is apparently racist and MEMRI should not cited as an official news source.

I’ve been the Apple Mecca. It’s just like any other Apple Store, but prettier.

Thomas Young Galloway Says:

October 14th, 2006 at 6:31 pm

Um, like most radical Muslim groups, they’re simply complaining for the sake of complaining. Best thing Apple could do in a situation like this would be to tell MEMRI to go straight to hell. The sooner everyone refuses to cringe and back down whenever these retards whine, the sooner they’ll get the message and go pick on someone else who can’t stand up for themselves, like their own people.

Joseph Blohe Says:

October 14th, 2006 at 6:46 pm

I’m curious. Did these same Muslims raise a stink over streets named Mecca? Or did they threaten to kill Pee Wee Herman when he recited “Mecca-Lecca-Hi, Mecca-Hiney-Ho”?

To paraphrase Kirsty Alley, these people are too stupid to live.

I have received some emails calling for protest and there have been some inflammatory news items about this store in a couple of unreliable newspaper in Pakistan but they all show pictures of the cube under construction with black panels covering it. In either case there is no need or grounds for affront. Some Muslims need to lighten up.

look to you people, because there are so many idiots that don’t think with their own brain, a lot of bad things are happening, one idiot who wrote something in a website(anonymous one), and put picture of meka beside the apple cube center to support his lie or whatever he/she is trying to do, many people were insulting other people and starting to find anything else to put their anger that they have against Muslim. may these people are using only 10 percent of their brains, wake up try to see around you think before you start attacking or you lose the humane side in you…

Sajjad Says:

If Muslims follow Islam they would not get offended so easily, MEMRI has a history:

O ye who believe! If a wicked person comes to you with any news, ascertain the truth, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful. [Quran 49:6]
