D-Link announces dual-mode cellphone
by Edwin in Electronic Gadgets, Mobile Phones
We all know how most smartphones these days come with WiFi connectivity, enabling you to make VoIP calls at WiFi hotspots. D-Link decided to throw its lot into the cellphone industry by lifting the curtains on its new V-Click dual-mode cellphone that enables users to switch between the regular cellular and WiFi networks at just a single click of a button. The V-Click is less of a smartphone as it comes with a measly 2″ 176 x 220 pixel color display, and leans more toward a cellphone with its form factor and overall design.
The D-Link V-Click cellphone will feature tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900 Mhz) and 802.11 Wi-Fi (2.4Ghz) access. You can connect to your cellular provider’s service by inserting the SIM card into the V-Click, and at WiFi hotspots, you can switch over to a VoIP program and start calling your contacts from there in an effort to reduce the phone bill at the end of the month. The V-Click phones already come unlocked, which means you can use your existing SIMs with any GSM cellular service provider around the world. You can also surf the Internet with the V-Click as long as there is an Internet connection in the vicinity, although the 2″ color display could be too small for most people, resulting in cramped eyes after a while.
This new type of cellphone looks set to stay as more and more cities worldwide are starting to incorporate 802.11 wireless technology in everyday places like schools, bus stops, and supermarkets. D-Link has also decided against including all the bells and whistles which are associated with traditional smartphones in an effort to provide the best battery life possible in this situation. D-Link will begin shipping the V-Click in Q1 next year at a yet undisclosed price.
