Aaaaaarrrg Spam

by Al in Site News

I added a spam filter to our comments yesterday and since then we’ve blocked about 200 spam comments which is great. Whilst I was checking that no legit comments had been blocked I thought it may be a good idea to check the junk folder in Outlook!

I now humbly apologise to the 100 or so senders of valid emails over the last 3 months, unfortuantely dumb Outlook sorted them in my junk folder and dumb me didn’t check for 3 months. I’ve belatedly replied to many but if I missed you I do apologise so feel free to comment here or contact us and I promise that I will check.

Now off to investigate a proper spam filter that I’ll write about in our sister site SoftSift.

I hate spam though I now hate false positives even more!

I totally agree with that, Al. This spam filter is a positive move, definitely although none of us would really want to miss out any false positives. Some of the spams are repetitive such that it has become so annoying even to know that they originate from a particular source, a distinct IP address. I’m sure with the Anti-spam in place, work is going to be more efficient.

Spam comments are annoying but the missed emails is a lot worse IMO, I’m pleased to say I’m getting a few responses to the emails it took me 2 months to respond to.

Hi… Can we help? Our anti-spam smtp proxy runs on java and has a fantastic catch rate with very low false positives and lots of features. We’re happy to let you have a 45 day trial. Just mail :-)
