Transparent canoe

by Paz

Transparent canoe.

I live about 200 metres from the Mediterranean Sea and I really want one of these. But this is a must-have for anyone else who lives close to water. If I didn’t live as close to the sea as I do, I’d buy one anyway and get in the car every Sunday.

It’s a transparent canoe (or kayak?), I must confess I don’t know the difference between a kayak and a canoe but as long as this thing floats; I don’t care!

The transparent hull is made from a polycarbonate material similar to that used in an F-15 fighter jet. The framework is made from lightweight aluminium and there are two buoyancy bags their in case you get into trouble, although the vessel isn’t recommended for rough seas. At just over 11 feet long and 33 inches wide it has a weight capacity of 425 ponds, which means it can effectively take two people and their video cameras, fishing tackle, and perhaps even one of those cool fish finding gadgets we featured recently!

Imagine the fun looking down at the aquatic wildlife though. The only snag is that fighter jet technology doesn’t come cheap and this thing will set you back a cool $1500!

Technology » Blog Archive » Transparent Canoe-Kayak With Transparent Hull Says: June 6, 2006 at 7:38 am

[...] It would be so nice to be able to go for a canoe over what is left of the great barrier reef. My only fear would be looking down over all the sharks who can’t wait to eat me. Hammacker Schlemmer are selling a kayak-canoe hybrid. It has a transparent polymer hull, giving you the ability to see through the bottom of the vessel while moving along the water surface. Advertised as being made of the same polymer that cockpit canopies in fighter jets use, which I hope makes them ultra strong. On top of that, it has a lightweight anodized aluminum frame (won’t rust so fast), and can seat two people. You won’t need to take a friend with you, seeing it weighs in at under 20 kgs (even my chicken wing arms can lift that), and measures 33 1⁄2″ W x 133″ L x 11″ D. Even though you don’t need much strength to lift it, you will need a heavy wallet to pay for it, at $US1,459.95 (why even bother with 95 cents?). Still for a interesting, different and maybe even fun water experience, being able to see the wildlife under you, would be pretty cool.
