A self-portrait; of your DNA

May 17th, 2006 by Paz in Home Gadgets

DNA self-portrait.

This isn’t really a gadget, but a cool idea for the home anyway; a framed portrait of your DNA to add a bit of style and individualism to your living room.

Getting your genetic portrait made is straight forward enough; choose your frame and colour option, take a sample of saliva using your “DNA collection kit” and wait for framed canvas portrait to arrive by post 4 to 8 weeks later.

The picture is almost guaranteed to be one of a kind because each DNA fingerprint image in the human population is unique, with the exception of identical twins conceived from the same egg.

Naturally, chic doesn’t come cheap. The cheapest 18”x 24” DNA portrait costs $390 plus shipping, the most expensive $1300, but comes with a gorgeous looking backlit frame shown in the photo above.

The portrait’s not to everyone’s taste in art though, my wife hates the idea so I won’t be getting one of these DNA portraits any time soon. But like them or loathe them, they’re guaranteed to turn heads.

The company GENEPORTRAIT Unique
Personalized DNA-Art Genetic Portraits
creates beautiful and scientifically-solid genetic portraits from a sample of your own DNA. They can include multiple individuals (people/pets) in one single portrait which makes the experience much less expensive and more meaningful: You can directly compare your fingerprint with
your loved ones’ (family members, couple, pets, friends), generating both a unique sense of closeness and
individuality. The artwork is delivered on CD giving you total freedom of choice to handle your work of art and save money in overall costs. Furthermore, you will preserve your DNA-art portrait for a lifetime.

[...] We wrote about DNA art earlier in the year, I just came across it again today and still find it particularly cool (if somewhat expensive) so thought I’d write about their products in a bit more detail (who knows they may even send me a freebie ). [...]

Another company proposing the same art styles http://www.dnalux.com, gives you a frame with the printed artwork, hence delivering a final artwork. They propose bespoke artworks as well. The fact there are some doctors among the founders gives credibility regarding the uniqueness of the fingerprint when you compare to other marketing-oriented companies doing the same.
