It’s here at last – smellovision.

Smellovision gadget.

This was an idea I heard about some time ago, but now it’s here – a gadget that releases an appropriate smell during critical parts of a film.

I asked my better half which movie would she like to enjoy with the extra dimension of smell. She thought for a moment, and somewhat enigmatically said; “Casablanca”….

Announced today by NTT Communications, the device will debut in Japan on April 22nd with the film “The New World”, starring Colin Farrell. Apparently, the equipment will be internet controlled and will release fragrances during seven different scenes of the love story. I can’t imagine the nature of the different musky scents that will permeate the cinema during a love story; if anyone’s in Japan at that time, perhaps they could give us some feedback.

In any case, I thought about my favourite film that would be enhanced by “smellovision”. I think top of the list would be “Top Gun”. An under-rated film, I had kittens waiting for Maverick to ‘engage’ as the Russian MiGs were buzzing around Val Kilmer. I can’t wait to smell the mixture of kerosene and diesel as Tom Cruise lifts hits the gas and lifts off from the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

But tell us? Which other films would you like to see and smell at the same time?

Would have to be Boogie Nights, either that or Pulp Fiction. I’d love to smell how good that ‘tasty burger’ was! (In Pulp Fiction of course!)

The movie Soul Food. I think all the food in the movie would be idea for a scent. Also any movie that centers around food.

I’d love to see Pink Flamingos in smell-0-vision.
I can hardly wait!
