Apparently the fab plant where these drives are made has a contamination issue, and a lot of these cheap 300 GB drives are actually ones that are prone to failure within the first year due to contaminants on the platters clogging up the R/W heads. Rather than dump the drives into the local garbage dump, they're dumping them instead on the unsuspecting home consumer market and putting a year warranty on them only. ----------- "A Fool and his Money are soon parted.
