It was the first time I'd seen vertical bike sheds, and the styling of them makes them look futuristic to me (though I must admit I find it difficult to become excited about a bike shed)

Futuristic Bike Sheds?
Hardly.
Vertical storage sheds for bikes were a commonplace item on Sydney railway stations back in the 60's and 70's (and possibly even before that!). The only difference was that they were not circular, but stored in a row either side of centre, and capable of storing many more bikes than 8. They included a roof as well!
