Hey Mr D.J. Play a song for me…

November 11th, 2005 by Marc in Audio/Video Gadgets, Software

I listen to a lot of music but I don’t subscribe to the “that artist is great and this one is junk” mentality. Granted there are certain genres that I tend to filter out but on the whole my tastes vary wildly.

The Pandora Project is a very cool music recommendation system that’s tailor made for people like me. They have managed to categorise a huge music library in terms of the characteristics of individual songs. Once you give them an example of a song you like they go off and play you more of the same type of thing.

The music recommendation system grew out of their Music Genome project and so far it’s been right on the money for me although they seem to be under some serious load at the moment so you may have to try a few times to get in.

The really great thing is the unexpected mix of music you get. They might well feed you music you’ve never heard of but it does seem to work. The system works via a very slick browser based interface.

A tip for non-US readers. The site registration requires that you live in the US and have a valid ZIP code. This list may come in handy :-)

That looks pretty cool but how many NAS’s are you going to need to host your collection?

I’m this far (holds fingers together) from buying one of these: http://www.infrant.com as it is :-)
