NukAlert Radiation Alarm (keyring)

Nuke Keyring
There must be a geiger counter craze going on at the moment. Following on from the geiger counter watch we reported on a few days a go you can now buy a Radiation detection device that can be attached to a set of keys, otherwise known as a keyring. The keyring chirps like a proper geiger counter (remember them from school) when radiation levels above the norm, with the frequency of chirps getting faster as radiation levels increase (though I’m not sure how you’re going to test this).

This could be classed as a multi function device:

  • High radiation warning device (obviously)
  • Key holder together-er device
  • Lost Key Locator, needs a block of uranium (not included).
  • You can find more information on this at the manufacturers site, nukalert or if you want to buy one they can be purchased at ThinkGeek for the crazy price of $149.99

You might test it by holding it next to a microwave, or some American smoke detectors, some have americonum in them, and its labeled as radioactive, i don’t know if any of these would work though

Bob7k, mcriwaves does not emmit ionizing radiation, so it will not work, and americium emits really low gamma energy, and it will not work, since you need atleast 100mR/h of gamma to beat the lead of the nukalert.

Hmm .. it takes 100 mR/h to set this thingy off ? Not too useful, if you ask me. Hell, my dosimeter gets triggered at 10 uR/h.
